Want More Energy, Focus, and Clarity? Change How You Shower.
Today, I want to talk about something we all do regularly: taking showers.
For most of us, a shower is just part of the daily routine. It’s quick, practical, and often rushed because there’s so much else to do. Whether it’s to wake up and start the day fresh or to wind down before bed, showers often tend to be a simple in-and-out cleanup.
But here’s the thing - showers are actually a kind of magic sweet spot. They give you uninterrupted time to yourself, away from everyone else, coupled with the white noise of running water and the soothing, refreshing feel of it on your skin.
And if you approach them a little differently, they can become a surprisingly powerful source of renewed energy - physical, mental, emotional, and also spark creativity!
(And yes, the idea for this post came to me in the shower. Where else? 😊)
When I talk to people, they often tell me how hard it is to find time for themselves - let alone moments of stillness or a quick meditation during a busy day.
The good news is we all take showers!
So why not add just a few extra minutes, tweak your routine slightly, and turn that time into a purposeful reset?
(Keep reading for a few simple tips 👇)
Showers are one of those things we do without much thought - like brushing teeth, folding laundry, or driving. They feel automatic, almost like wasted time.
But they aren’t just another chore - they’re good for your body and mind. They offer both physical and mental benefits: warm water relaxes muscles, eases tension, and improves circulation, while also clearing your head, easing stress, and leaving you feeling lighter.
I can’t count how many times I’ve stepped out of the shower feeling relaxed, calm and with clarity on a nagging question or a new idea I didn’t even realize I was working on.
When you rethink these moments, they can become micro-moments for creativity, clarity, and recharging.
Slowing down and approaching your shower with intention can make it one of the most refreshing parts of your day.
Here’s how to make your showers more effective:
Cold Water for Energy Boost: Growing up in Russia, it was common to see people go to a banya (a hot sauna) and then jump into a cold plunge - or even straight into the snow. Inspired by this tradition, I’ve been incorporating contrast showers (alternating cold and hot water) for years. They improve circulation, boost energy levels, give your skin a healthy glow, and offer a moment of mental clarity. Try slowly incorporating a few seconds of cold water into your shower and see how you feel, gradually increasing over time.
Aromatherapy for Relaxation and Creativity: Spend time choosing products with scents and textures that truly lift your mood and feel amazing on your body. Adding an aromatherapy element to your shower can reduce stress, improve focus, and help you slip into a relaxing, creative flow state.
Gratitude Reflection for a Positive Shift: Use this time to reflect on things you’re grateful for. The quiet, uninterrupted environment of a shower is perfect for this practice, which has been shown to improve emotional well-being. It also helps shift your attention from negative to positive, giving your day a lighter start.
Next time you step into the shower, don’t treat it like just another task to check off your list. Slow down. Take your time. Let it be a moment of calm, creativity, and renewal.
You’re already doing it every day - why not make it work for you? 😉
