Simple Reminders to Dial Up Your Energy
As we enjoy the holiday season and prepare for the new year, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on what truly fuels us. While we often focus and look for quick strategies to be productive, the real key lies in managing your energy and understanding your unique energy givers and drainers.
It’s not just about how we feel on a physical level - which is often the first thing we think of when it comes to energy - it’s about looking at energy in a more holistic way: what puts you in an energetic, resourceful state that allows you to manage stress, stay resilient, productive, and make space for the things that matter most.
Our energy tank isn’t built by one big thing. It’s the result of small, consistent actions across different areas of life. Small adjustments to your routines and habits, even those that seem insignificant, can accumulate over time and transform how you feel and show up every day.
This is why I created the PEACE framework - an attempt to take a more holistic view of energy management. It’s about many small, interconnected aspects that contribute to your overall well-being and productivity.
Each letter in PEACE reflects a key dimension of energy:
P - Physical (nurturing your body)
E - Emotional (nurturing your mind)
A - Attention (improving focus and minimizing distractions)
C - Connection (reconnecting with your true self, values, and passions)
E - Environment (creating an organized, clutter-free space that supports productivity)
Each of these dimensions is deeply personal and requires self-discovery to uncover what works best for you. Often, mentors, coaches, or even friends can help you see what’s hard to notice on your own.
For now, here are just a few simple reminders for each dimension - based on what I’ve seen, heard, and experienced - of things that many of us overlook but could benefit from.
P - Physical: Prioritize Quality Sleep
Sleep isn’t just about the number of hours - it’s about quality. Create a calming bedtime routine: dim the lights, avoid screens and negative content, or read something soothing.
These are just examples, but the key is to notice what helps you unwind and do more of that before bed. Prioritizing this time will help you fall asleep faster and wake up more energized.
E - Emotional: Slow Down to Gain Awareness
Slowing down is at the heart of understanding your mind. It helps you notice patterns, see what’s draining your emotional energy, and recognize what fills you up.
One simple way to slow down in the middle of a hectic day is through controlled breathing. Find a quiet space and focus on your breathing: inhale deeply, hold, exhale for a longer count, hold again, and repeat the cycle until you feel a shift. Even a few minutes can help you calm down and regain clarity.
A - Attention: Use Timers to Sharpen Your Focus
Staying focused in a world full of distractions is no small task. One simple way to manage your attention is by using a timer when tackling a task. Setting a timer for short, focused 20-minute intervals can help you stay on track without feeling overwhelmed. Breaks between intervals help reset your mind and keep your energy steady.
C - Connection: Reconnect with Your Passions
Reconnecting with your passions and activities that bring you joy, but have been deprioritized, can instantly put you in a great mood. These activities are often a unique source of energy that you may not even realize.
Schedule micro-moments of joy in your calendar and treat them like a meeting with an important client. Don’t deprioritize yourself or the things you love - these moments of joy will fuel you and have a ripple effect on other aspects of your life.
E - Environment: Declutter the Area That Drains Your Energy
Your surroundings play a huge role in how you feel and function. A messy or cluttered space can drain your energy and create mental noise, making it harder to think clearly.
We all have that one messy space that feels like a cloud hanging over us - your desk, a cluttered closet, or a chaotic kitchen cabinet. Start the new year by picking one small area to declutter. Organize it in a way that works for you, and notice the immediate sense of lightness and satisfaction. You may even feel inspired to tackle another space next. ;)
These tips may not be groundbreaking, but they work - and they can instantly boost your energy. They’re small, simple reminders of things we all know but sometimes forget to prioritize. As you think about the new year, take a moment to reflect on what fuels your energy and how you can give yourself small wins that build momentum.
Wishing you and your loved ones an amazing, safe, and joyful holiday season filled with positive energy, peace, and meaningful moments.
